Occupational Therapy

This is a form of treatment that involves the use of therapeutic interventions to help people with physical, mental, and social challenges to live an independent life through, maximum     independence in Activities of Daily Living Skills (ADLS) and promote acquisition of skills. Training is done in any delayed developmental milestone and skills taught for independent functioning.


This involves interventions such as;


  • Rehabilitation and habilitation
  • Carrying out adaptations in their environment, tools & equipment they use in their life to ease learning and functioning.
  • Modifying the task to simplicity for easy performance.
  • Teaching skills essential for productivity
  • Educating the client or family in order to increase participation and function
  • Prescribing, giving and recommending for assistive devices.

 

The above inteventions help the children with mental and phyicial challenges attain independence in activities of daily living through training of skills such as;


  • Gross motor skills eg sitting, crawling, standing, walking and running
  • Fine motor skills eg hand dominace, hand writing, scissoring, and general grip and grasp
  • Motor planning and organisation skills
  • Sensory stimulation and regulation eg, in vissual, auditory, tactile, proprioception, vestibular balance, gustatory and olfactory
  • Visual perception skills
  • Visual motor integration skills
